WHY GO

Step into a lavish 17th-century hilltop retreat, with richly decorated rooms, a grand Riding House and wide Derbyshire views.

Bolsover Castle has the theatre of a fortress and the spirit of a country house built for pleasure. Wander through the Little Castle’s furnished rooms, from the basement kitchen to the top-floor chambers, then step into the Venus Garden and look out across the Derbyshire countryside. William Cavendish’s passion for horsemanship comes alive in the vast Riding House and stables. The family play area, exhibitions and café make it easy to turn a history stop into a full afternoon, while the castle’s terraces offer space to linger over the view.

Editorial review: 30 October 2026. Conditions may change.
Approach
From the main castle car park, follow Castle Street and signs to the visitor entrance and Admissions; allow approximately five minutes one way to this entrance/grounds arrival. After admission, continue towards the Little Castle and Riding House: the operator’s access map places the Little Castle a further 250 m into the site, so allow additional walking and exploring time.
Walking time from arrival (one way)
5 minutes (approximate)
Terrain & steps
Town pavement and firm site paths lead into gardens and historic buildings; grass, gravel and some steps are uneven, and surfaces can be slippery when wet.
Accessibility
Accessible parking is about 50 m from the entrance and visitors with limited mobility can be dropped at the visitor centre. The Little Castle is inaccessible to wheelchairs because of many stairs. The Terrace Range, Venus Garden and parts of the Riding House and stables have level access; some routes vary seasonally. Accessible toilets are in the visitor centre. Contact English Heritage before visiting for current route details.
Access & restrictions
Ticketed English Heritage attraction; last entry 30 minutes before closing. Free parking in Bolsover, including the castle car park. Dogs on leads are welcome in the grounds, but only assistance dogs can enter the Little Castle and Riding Range. No smoking, vaping, barbecues or naked flames. Stagecoach buses 1, 2, 49, 53 and 53a pass close to the entrance; Chesterfield rail station is about six miles away.
Facilities
Entrance café with child portions and high chairs; picnic lawn and benches; shop and second-hand bookshop; toilets, accessible toilets and baby changing; family play area; multimedia guide with hearing loop subject to availability; bicycle racks.
Seasonal considerations
The published schedule is daily 10am–4pm through 1 November 2026, then Wednesday–Sunday 10am–4pm from 2 November to 23 December. Closed 24–26 December, then daily 27 December–1 January. Riding demonstrations are normally April–October. Check live hours and events before travel.

Planning this discovery

Viewpoints · Historic buildings
Approach walk: approximately 5 minutes one way from the stated arrival point.
Typical total visit: 130–190 minutes, including exploring.
Step-free approach: not checked.
Retains the approximately 5-minute one-way walk from the main castle car park to the visitor entrance/grounds. The Little Castle is a further 250 m beyond Admissions on the operator’s map, so that exploration must not be mistaken for the initial approach. Approximate total 130–190 minutes adds the return entrance approach to the tourism listing’s typical 2–3-hour on-site visit. Full approach step-free status is unable to confirm at this time; level routes exist in parts of the grounds, while the Little Castle has many stairs. Typical timing excludes special events and long meals.
