WHY GO
Slip out of Castleton into a dramatic limestone gorge, where a rocky path climbs beneath the walls of Peveril Castle.
Only a short walk from Castleton’s streets, Cave Dale opens into a steep-sided limestone valley that feels a world away from the village. The Limestone Way climbs between crags, with Peveril Castle high above and changing views back towards the Hope Valley. A short visit to the lower gorge delivers the dramatic setting; keen walkers can continue up the rocky dale to grassy ground and longer routes over the plateau. Its appeal is simple: striking geology, a sense of discovery and a memorable walk beginning almost at the market place.

Approach
From Castleton National Park Centre, follow Cross Street and Castle Street to the Market Place and war memorial, then continue uphill to Bargate. Take the signed Limestone Way entrance between the cottages and follow the rocky path into the lower gorge. Allow approximately twenty minutes one way to the lower-gorge location, about 0.8 km along the mapped route. This is separate from the National Park’s 40-minute, 1.3 km climb to its higher fieldwork site. For a longer outing, Peak District Walks describes a two-mile circular route taking 1½–2½ hours.

Terrain & steps
Village pavements give way to a narrow, rocky limestone track with uneven stones and a steady uphill climb; the dale sides are steep and the path can be slippery or wet after rain.
Accessibility
The lower-gorge route is rocky, uneven and uphill, with no verified step-free alternative, so wheelchair and buggy access to the gorge is unable to confirm at this time. The Castleton visitor centre has accessible facilities; the National Park offers separate Miles Without Stiles routes around Castleton.
Access & restrictions
Cave Dale is reached on the signed Limestone Way walking route; there is no admission charge. The adjacent Cross Street council car park is pay and display, open 24 hours and has accessible spaces. The council lists coin, card-machine and PayByPhone payment options, although the visitor centre page says change only; carry a backup payment method. Keep dogs under close control on the path and around livestock.
Facilities
No toilets, water or food outlets within Cave Dale. At the starting point, Castleton National Park Centre has displays, retail and a café; adjacent council toilets include accessible toilets and baby changing and are listed as open year-round, 24 hours. Castleton also has shops and cafés.
Seasonal considerations
The outdoor walking route is available throughout the year, but wet weather can make the limestone slippery and the dale can be exposed higher up. Castleton National Park Centre currently lists daily 10am–4pm; check before travel. Parking charges and café hours can change.
