WHY GO

Explore medieval rooms, a luminous Elizabethan Long Gallery and terraced gardens above the River Wye.

Haddon Hall draws you into a remarkably layered historic house. Move from the medieval banqueting hall and chapel to the light-filled Elizabethan Long Gallery, then step outside to gardens that descend towards the River Wye. The chapel’s surviving wall paintings and the contrasting character of the rooms reward a close look, while the garden terraces offer a different view of the house and its setting. It is a visit to savour slowly, with architecture, craftsmanship and landscape woven into the same afternoon.

Editorial review: 30 October 2026. Conditions may change.
Approach
Use the dedicated car park on the opposite side of the A6 and cross carefully at the pedestrian crossing point. Follow the driveway towards the stable block and hall entrance. The operator gives about 366 m from car park to hall, including gravel and approximately 30 steps; allow around ten minutes, excluding ticketing.
Walking time from arrival (one way)
10 minutes (approximate)
Terrain & steps
Gravel approach, worn stone thresholds, uneven floors and many steps, some without handrails. Gardens are terraced and include low parapets and unguarded drops.
Accessibility
The operator describes access for people with restricted mobility as very challenging and says wheelchairs and pushchairs are generally not permitted in the hall or gardens. Five Blue Badge bays are in the public car park; there is no visitor vehicle access up to the house. The stable-block toilets include an accessible cubicle, but its approach has steps. Contact Haddon before visiting to discuss individual access needs.
Access & restrictions
Ordinary admission is ticketed: published adult price £29.50, with children aged 0–15 free. Historic Houses membership covers ordinary admission, excluding special events; parking remains payable (£4.40 per car). Dogs are excluded from hall, gardens and grounds except guide/support dogs. Large bags, rucksacks and tripods cannot enter the hall. Smoking and vaping are prohibited. Surrounding private parkland is accessed through organised guided walks.
Facilities
Restaurant in the former stable block, visitor shop, toilets in the stable block and lower courtyard, baby changing in the hall, seating in the Great Hall and Long Gallery, garden benches and bicycle racks. Pushchair storage is available; bring your own child carrier.
Seasonal considerations
The current schedule gives hall and garden opening 10.30am–4pm, last entry 3pm, through 30 October 2026. Ordinary opening then closes from 31 October until the Mercatum event season. Mercatum operates Wednesday–Sunday over six weeks, 11 November–20 December, with timed morning, afternoon and twilight tickets; event terms and prices differ. Check the live calendar before travel.

Planning this discovery

Area: Bakewell, Derbyshire
Historic buildings
Approach walk: approximately 10 minutes one way from the stated arrival point.
Typical total visit: 140–200 minutes, including exploring.
The stated approach has steps or stiles. Read the accessibility notes for details.
The operator documents 366 m from parking to the hall, including about 30 steps and the A6 crossing; retain an approximate 10-minute one-way approach. Step-free is no for that full approach. For ordinary house-and-garden admission, the official FAQ recommends at least 2 hours and Day Out With The Kids gives a typical 2–3 hours. The approximate total allowance here is 140–200 minutes, adding the two 10-minute approaches to that on-site range. This is not a Mercatum market time slot or a promise to complete everything; café stops and queues may add time.
