WHY GO

Follow the gritstone skyline above Hathersage for wide Peak District views, dramatic weathered rock and one of England’s best-known climbing landscapes.

Stanage Edge stretches for around 3.5 miles above Hathersage, its gritstone cliffs opening onto sweeping views across the Peak District. A walk up from Hollin Bank brings you from the wooded slopes to an exposed, rocky skyline where the changing light can make even a short visit memorable. Climbers come for more than 1,200 documented routes and boulder problems; walkers can simply enjoy the scale of the escarpment and its moorland setting. This is a rugged place, so sturdy footwear and a weather check are sensible. The estate is cared for by the Peak District National Park Authority, and its wildlife needs space: keep dogs on a short lead and check current seasonal restrictions before setting out.

Editorial review: 30 October 2026. Conditions may change.
Approach
From Hollin Bank car park, walk uphill from the wooded slope towards Stanage Edge. The National Park Authority estimates around 20–30 minutes from its Stanage car parks to the edge. The place pin marks the Popular End area; the escarpment continues well beyond it.
Walking time from arrival (one way)
30 minutes (approximate)
Terrain & steps
Uphill, uneven and unsurfaced paths with rocky ground at the edge; some short scrambling may be involved. The escarpment is exposed to wind and changing weather.
Accessibility
The National Park Authority says there are no formal surfaced or accessible routes to the edge and does not recommend pushchairs. Hollin Bank has a disabled toilet that requires a RADAR key.
Access & restrictions
Hollin Bank is a pay-and-display car park (cards and coins; RingGo 51710). Parking can fill early on weekends and holidays; do not park on verges. Keep dogs on a short lead throughout the estate. No fires, barbecues or wild camping. Check current wildlife, climbing and path restrictions. As of 29 October 2026, Hooks Carr car park is affected by a temporary closure, so check the authority’s closures page before relying on it.
Facilities
Toilets are about 250 metres east of Hollin Bank car park on The Dale, with baby-changing facilities and a RADAR-key disabled toilet. There are no facilities on the edge and no permanent food or drink at the main car parks; Hathersage has amenities.
Seasonal considerations
Spring and summer ring ouzel nesting can bring temporary climbing or footpath restrictions. The exposed ridge can be harsh in poor weather; check conditions before visiting. Car parks are especially busy at weekends and in school holidays.

Retains the researched approximate 30-minute one-way approach from Hollin Bank to the Popular End area, within the operator’s published 20–30-minute guidance for its Stanage car parks. This is not a walk along the entire 3½-mile escarpment. The National Park describes unsurfaced terrain and scrambling, but does not certify that this precise full approach has no steps or stiles; step-free remains unknown and wheelchair suitability is not claimed. Total visit duration is unable to confirm at this time. Hooks Carr’s temporary closure notice remains active; Hollin Bank is an advertised alternative.
