WHY GO

A short route from Curbar Gap leads to wide views over the Derwent Valley from a classic gritstone edge.

At Curbar Edge, the land drops away to reveal a broad sweep of the Derwent Valley. The gritstone crags, grazing cattle and big Peak District sky make this an easy place to linger with a camera or a picnic. The National Park's 260 m 'Access for All' route reaches a viewing area from Curbar Gap; longer paths continue towards Froggatt and White Edge for walkers who want to make a day of it.

Approach
Cross the road at the opposite end to the car park entrance, follow the track beside the wall and field, pass through the gate, then turn right to the designated viewing area, 260 m from the car park. Allow approximately five minutes one way, depending on pace. An alternative path from the rear of the car park reaches the picnic area.
Walking time from arrival (one way)
5 minutes (approximate)
Terrain & steps
Compacted route to the official viewing area; beyond it, longer edge walks have narrow, stony and sometimes steep sections.
Accessibility
The National Park rates the 260 m viewpoint route 'Access for All', intended for pushchairs and unassisted wheelchairs. The Eastern Moors Partnership also identifies an accessible picnic area. Longer walks along the edge have more difficult terrain.
Access & restrictions
Curbar Gap car park is pay and display; the Eastern Moors Partnership lists free parking for Blue Badge holders and National Trust/RSPB members. Keep dogs on leads and give grazing cattle space. No barbecues or campfires.
Facilities
Car park and picnic area at Curbar Gap. No toilets confirmed at the Gap; National Trust facilities at Longshaw are about a 10–15 minute drive away. A catering van visits on Fridays and weekends, subject to availability.
Seasonal considerations
The exposed edge can be windy. Catering is intermittent; check before travelling. Longer paths can become slippery in wet weather.

Viewpoints
Approach walk: approximately 5 minutes one way from the stated arrival point.
Typical total visit: 20–180 minutes, including exploring.
The stated approach has been checked for steps and stiles. Read the full terrain and accessibility notes to decide whether it suits you.
Allow approximately 5 minutes each way for the National Park’s documented 260 m route from Curbar Gap car park to the designated viewing area. This is a planning estimate, not a timed measurement. Step-free applies to that gate-access route only: the National Park’s Miles Without Stiles standards explicitly exclude steps and stiles. The road crossing, surfaces and gradients still need consideration; longer edge walks differ. Total visit duration is unable to confirm at this time.
