WHY GO
Look across the River Wye, wooded Monsal Dale and the five arches of Headstone Viaduct from a celebrated Peak District viewpoint.
Monsal Head gathers the White Peak into one memorable scene: the River Wye winding through a steep-sided dale, wooded slopes and the graceful arches of Headstone Viaduct. It is a fine stop for a short look across the valley, with cafés and a pub nearby. If you want to see the viaduct from above, the traffic-free Monsal Trail crosses it, though the descent from Monsal Head to the trail is steep.

Approach
From Monsal Head car park, follow the short signed path towards the roadside viewpoint above Monsal Dale. Allow approximately two minutes one way, depending on which parking area and bay you use. The separate footpath down to the viaduct and Monsal Trail is steep, includes steps and is not an accessible trail entrance; allow additional time for that longer outing.
Walking time from arrival (one way)
2 minutes (approximate)
Terrain & steps
The viewpoint is close to the car park. The descent to Monsal Trail is steep and can have uneven, slippery steps; it is a separate outing from the viewpoint.
Accessibility
The tourism board identifies a short-stay car park overlooking the dale and free parking for Blue Badge holders. The route down to Monsal Trail is not accessible; for level trail access, use Hassop or Millers Dale stations instead. The Monsal Head public toilets are listed without an accessible toilet.
Access & restrictions
Pay-and-display parking at Monsal Head. The small short-stay area has a maximum stay of one hour; check signs for the larger rear car park. The viewpoint and nearby facilities can be busy in summer.
Facilities
Car parks, public toilets, cafés, pub, hotel and gift shop at Monsal Head. The National Park lists toilets open year-round, 24 hours, with no accessible toilet or baby-change facility.
Seasonal considerations
The viewpoint is exposed to the weather and summer can be busy. Wet conditions make the steep footpath to the viaduct slippery.
