WHY GO
Venture beneath Buxton to discover illuminated limestone chambers, dramatic stalactites and the story of an underground river.
Step below Buxton into Poole’s Cavern, where illuminated passages reveal a world shaped by water and limestone. Look for the celebrated Flitch of Bacon stalactite and the distinctive orange Poached Egg formations, then discover more about the cave’s human and natural history in the visitor exhibition. Guided tours bring the chambers to life, while the operator also advertises self-paced audio visits on selected arrangements. Above ground, the café and surrounding country park make it easy to turn a subterranean adventure into a longer outing.

Approach
From the visitor car park follow the short signed path to the Visitor Centre and cave admissions. Allow approximately 3 minutes one way; the exact distance depends on your parking bay. The walking estimate ends at admissions and excludes the cave tour and country-park walks.

Terrain & steps
A short surfaced approach leads to the Visitor Centre. Underground paths extend about 300 metres into the cave; beyond the main chamber there are 28 steps, 14 up and 14 down. Wear sturdy footwear.
Accessibility
Blue Badge bays are near the entrance and the Visitor Centre, café and shop have step-free entry. The first 100 metres of cave, including the main chamber, have no steps. Further wheelchair access needs a prior site visit and risk assessment. Accessible toilets, hearing loops and sensory-bag hire are offered. One qualifying carer can enter free with a paying visitor and accepted evidence.
Access & restrictions
Book ahead through the official ticket page; walk-up places are not guaranteed. Current admission prices are unable to confirm at this time. Parking is pay-and-display, with Blue Badge and BCA Oak member exemptions. Standard tours welcome dogs; SEN tours permit assistance dogs only. Pushchairs are unsuitable for cave steps; a child carrier is recommended.
Facilities
Visitor Centre, exhibition included with cave admission, café, shop, toilets and accessible parking. Adjacent Buxton Country Park offers woodland walks, which are rougher and should not be assumed wheelchair accessible. Contact 01298 26978 or info@poolescavern.co.uk for access arrangements.
Seasonal considerations
The cave stays cool, around 7°C, so bring a warm layer throughout the year. Winter river noise can be loud. The FAQ lists October–March Visitor Centre hours of 9:45am–4pm weekdays and 9:45am–4:30pm weekends, excluding school holidays; Christmas Day and Boxing Day are closed. Café pages give differing closing times: check directly and plan for the earlier 4pm finish. Guided tours last approximately 45 minutes; check current departure times and available formats.
