WHY GO
Walk through Grin Low Woods to Buxton’s Victorian hilltop tower, with broad views across the town and surrounding Peak District.
A woodland climb from Poole’s Cavern leads to open ground and the small stone tower of Solomon’s Temple. Built in 1896 on Grin Low, the folly gives this short walk a clear destination and a fine view over Buxton. On clear days, the surrounding Peak District hills extend the scene well beyond the town. The approach adds its own interest, with woodland sculptures and traces of the area’s lime-burning past. Pause on the hilltop, or climb the narrow tower stairs for a higher perspective.

Approach
From Poole’s Cavern Visitor Centre, collect a trail leaflet when open and follow the signed woodland paths through Grin Low Woods towards Solomon’s Temple, emerging onto the grassy hilltop. Allow around 30 minutes each way; Visit Buxton gives a 20–40 minute range depending on route and pace. The tower staircase adds a short climb.
Walking time from arrival (one way)
30 minutes (approximate)
Terrain & steps
An uphill woodland route on uneven gravel and rough paths, followed by open grassland. Mud, roots and slippery surfaces are possible. The tower’s small, steep and worn steps require care; the summit is exposed to wind.
Accessibility
Buxton Civic Association says the country park’s uneven trails are unsuitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs/buggies. The tower has stair access only. Poole’s Cavern Visitor Centre has level access, accessible toilets, baby changing and designated Blue Badge parking, so it can provide a more accessible starting-point stop even when the hill walk is unsuitable.
Access & restrictions
The temple walk is free; parking charges apply at Poole’s Cavern. Exact current parking prices and gate-closing times are unable to confirm at this time: check signs on arrival. Keep dogs on leads and under close supervision because livestock graze nearby. Cycling, motorcycling and horse riding are not permitted in Grin Low Woods and Buxton Country Park. The county council prohibits barbecues at its countryside sites.
Facilities
At Poole’s Cavern: café, shop, visitor centre, trail information, toilets, accessible toilet and baby changing, subject to opening hours. Carry what you need for the hilltop. The separate Grin Low car park toilet block is currently closed until further notice, according to Derbyshire County Council; this notice is distinct from Poole’s Cavern facilities.
Seasonal considerations
The walk is available throughout the year; daylight and weather affect visibility and footing. Spring and summer bring woodland wildflowers, autumn brings changing foliage, and winter can bring wet or icy paths. Poole’s Cavern’s published October–March visitor-centre hours, outside school holidays, are 9.45am–4pm weekdays and 9.45am–4.30pm weekends; closed Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Confirm café and car park arrangements before travel.
